In my line of work, I read many stories most of them very tragic that I sometimes forget the magic , delight and multiple layers in a very good story.
In many cultures, deep meaning is contained with a story. In our current technocracy and gadget obsessed world that we sadly dismiss stories as fiction with a sneer.
And yet, how we express the valiue of chivalry, or valour or love? These are not commodities, there is not an app for them. They are expressed in literature through stories. The bravery of Frodo, the nobility of the elves. For me Tolkien's masterpiece allows me to escape in the warm fields of the shire, tremble at the shrieks if the riders, and wait longingly for an apple.
As one of my friends says ´it is an allegory for the Christian life, expressing deep meaning by means of story and fairy tale as this is perhaps the only way we can approach these sacred mysteries’. This is not a quote but I agree with the sentiment.
